This Week’s Torah Portion, for Kids

Every Shabbat, Jewish communities around the world read the same section of the Torah — the parashat hashavua, the portion of the week. Here is the complete 2026–2030 schedule (diaspora), each portion’s Hebrew name with nikud, and a parent-friendly guide to turning ten minutes a week into your family’s favorite Jewish rhythm. No prior Hebrew needed.

What is the weekly parsha?

The Torah — the Five Books of Moses — is divided into 54 portions, one (sometimes two) read aloud in synagogue every Shabbat morning. Start to finish, the whole cycle takes exactly one Jewish year: we finish Devarim (Deuteronomy) on Simchat Torah, dance with the scrolls, and immediately roll back to Bereshit — “In the beginning” — to start again. No week of Jewish childhood is ever without a story.

For a homeschool family, the parasha is the easiest Jewish rhythm there is: it arrives on its own every week, the whole community is reading the same thing at the same time, and the stories — a flood and an ark, a coat of many colors, a sea that splits, a talking donkey — were made for children. You do not need to read Hebrew, own a Torah scroll, or prepare anything. Ten minutes at the Shabbat table is a complete lesson.

How to teach it to a 5-year-old (the 10-minute version)

  1. Friday, before candle lighting: look up this week’s portion in the table below and read a kid-level summary (ours are coming — one page per parasha).
  2. At the Shabbat table: tell the story in your own words — one big idea, not the whole portion. “This week, Noach builds a very big boat.”
  3. Ask one question: “What would you pack on the ark?” A parasha question beats a parasha lecture every time.
  4. Say the name in Hebrew: every portion is named for its first important word — your child can learn to say it. That’s real Hebrew, one word a week.

Two notes for the schedule below: (1) On festival weeks (Pesach, Sukkot, and when a holiday falls on Shabbat) a special holiday reading replaces the weekly portion, so the cycle pauses — those Shabbatot simply don’t appear in the table. (2) In some years two short portions are combined into one Shabbat (you’ll see names like Matot-Masei) so the cycle always finishes exactly at Simchat Torah. This table follows the diaspora schedule; in Israel the readings can run a week ahead for a stretch after Pesach or Shavuot.

Weekly parsha FAQ

What is the parashat hashavua (weekly Torah portion)?

The Torah is divided into 54 portions (parshiyot). One portion — sometimes two combined — is read aloud in synagogue every Shabbat morning, so the whole Torah is completed in exactly one Jewish year. The cycle ends and immediately restarts on Simchat Torah, in the fall.

How do I find this week's parsha?

Use the schedule table on this page — the highlighted row is the current week. Each row shows the Shabbat date, the portion's name in English and vowelized Hebrew, and the exact Torah reading.

Why are two portions sometimes combined?

The Jewish year varies in length (a leap year adds a whole month), but the Torah always has to finish exactly at Simchat Torah. In shorter years, certain pairs of adjacent short portions — like Vayakhel-Pekudei or Matot-Masei — are read together on one Shabbat to keep the cycle on schedule.

Do Israel and the diaspora read the same portion?

Usually yes. But when the final day of Pesach or Shavuot falls on Shabbat, communities in Israel (where the festival is one day shorter) move ahead to the next portion while the diaspora reads the festival reading. The schedules can stay one week apart for several weeks until a combined portion brings them back together. This page follows the diaspora schedule.

When does the Torah reading cycle start over?

On Simchat Torah — the joyful conclusion of the fall holiday season. We read the very end of Devarim (Deuteronomy), dance with the Torah scrolls, and immediately read the opening of Bereshit (Genesis): “In the beginning.” Look for the “new cycle” badge in the schedule table.

How do I teach the weekly parsha to a young child?

Keep it to ten minutes at the Shabbat table: tell one big idea from the story in your own words, ask your child one imaginative question about it, and teach the portion's Hebrew name. You don't need to read Hebrew or cover every detail — consistency beats completeness. Our free K–3 holiday lessons on the blog model exactly this approach.
